Solitary Confinement Effect on Prisoners Ashlee Chavez California State University Bakersfield Abstract This paper will include a review of different prison systems that have occurred in America, and how the Pennsylvania and New York or Auburn model have helped facilitate the use of solitary confinement. To establish the negative effects solitary confinement has on humans, this paper will provide reasons it is used, how it is used, and review conditions of solitary confinement. It is widely used for purpose of punishment within prison systems and has developed into large super maximum facilities to hold the more dangerous inmates incarcerated. Harry Barnes, states there is no exact date imprisonment started as an act of punishment (1921). If there was a date, it would be hard to identify exactly when imprisonment started as a use of punishment. Corporal punishment was developed to inflict some sort physical pain, and dates back centuries. During the eighteenth century, corporal punishment transitioned to imprisonment, but was used seldom (Barnes 1921). Solitary confinement has a long history and was introduced into the American prison system in the early 1800s. West Jersey and Pennsylvania Quaker are to be given credit for their contributions to the development of the prison systems. Jersey and Quakers initiated the idea of imprisonment as a mode of punishment, and combined the punishment with hard labor; thus created the prison system entirely (Barnes 1921). This system would be noted as the Pennsylvania system. Solitary confinement gets its start in the Pennsylvania system though an experiment conducted in the early 1820s. Inmates would be separated individually in small cells for majority of their day without any hard labor. For the short time they were permitted out of their individual cells, they were allowed to get physical exercise in small cells located outside.
